Programs for Adults

Programs for Children and Youth

First Church offers many programs and activities for adults of all ages: faith-based and general book discussion groups, social groups and outings, and craft groups, to name a few. Below are some of the programs currently underway. In addition, there are many other ways for adults to participate through Outreach and Mission programs, in our choral and handbell choirs, and volunteering during worship, collation, and church events.

8:15 Group.

This Sunday morning group meets at 8:15am in the Church Vestry. They share a light breakfast together and then begin discussing a faith-based book. Recently, the 8:15 group has been talking about the book, “Finding God in the Questions” by Dr Timothy Johnson. Dr. Johnson is the medical editor for ABC news and is an ordained minister serving as assistant minister of the Community Covenant Church in West Peabody, MA. This book is about his deeply personal journey of faith. He investigates the plausibility of God’s existence and explores the significance of the person of Jesus. New members are always welcome. For more information, contact Ken and Pat Konkle

United Workers.

Come join this group and have fun, fellowship, great desserts, and help support the church. Meetings are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., on the first Wednesday of the month. They meet every month except July. United Workers make beautiful potholders to raise money for the work of the church. Over the past 10 years they have made well over 2400 potholders. Contact Donna Dobbins for more information.

Handicraft Group.

This group meets on Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. Contact Phyllis Cooke for more information or just stop by on Tuesday!

Moms’ Book Group.

The Moms’ Book Group meets the first Friday of the month at 10:00 am in the Church Library from September through June. If you are interested in childcare, please contact Ann Guay or Wendy Stacey in advance. Some of the books read this year were “Freedom” by Jonathan Franzen, “Putting Away Childish Things” by Marcus J. Borg, “The Kids Are All Right” by Welch et al, “Little Bee” by Chris Cleave, “Traveling With Pomegranates”, by Sue Monk Kidd and Ann Kidd Taylor, and “Name All the Animals” by Alison Smith.

Women’s Fellowship.

Join the Women’s Fellowship Group for breakfast on the second Tuesday of each month, 7:30 a.m., at Riverview Restaurant in Billerica.

Men’s Breakfast Group

This men’s group meets Wednesdays at 6:30am to enjoy coffee, toast and conversation. They often discuss a book they are reading in their meetings (no preparation required).

Please call or email the officewith any questions you have about these programs. All of our Youth Program teachers, helpers, and youth resource adults have been “CORI’d” (criminal background check).

Youth Groups

We have both Middle School Youth and Senior High Youth who meet to learn and explore their faith, make new friends, and serve the community.

From September through May/June we offer childcare for infants and young children. We provide clean, age appropriate toys and books which allow your children to experience the love of God in caring ways while you enjoy worship services.  Pre-schoolers also enjoy using crayons and play dough.

Music

There are many opportunities throughout the school year for children to participate in our music program. Examples include, the children’s choir, Christmas pageant, Spring musical, and bell ringing and drumming workshops on designated “Wonderful Wednesdays”.
