On Saturday, January 14, 2017, First Church will be hosting a benefit event that will donate 100% of the proceeds to our mission work in West Virginia. This program has been in place now for 3 years, and supports a growing list of inspiring partner organizations in West Virginia, including:
- Appalachian South Folklife Center (ASFC)
- The Wade Center for Children
- Open Heart Ministries
- RiffRaff Arts Collective
- Stages Music School for Children
The event will take place at First Church of Christ, Congregational, 25 Great Road in Bedford, MA and will start at 3 pm and continue through 9 pm. Drop in anytime during the event. The program will consist of Appalachian music and storytelling, a southern inspired buffet dinner, a cake walk, an arts and crafts sale featuring handmade items from West Virginia and a wide variety of children’s activities throughout the program. For more event details, see additional information below.
Appalachian Music & Storytelling
One of the premier highlights of the First Church Mission Fair will be live Appalachian music and storytelling about West Virginia culture and the challenging economic environment citizens are facing today. It will also focus on the opportunities available for mission work as partners in a shared journey to bring hope and optimism back to a naturally beautiful and amazing part of our country.
The Mission Festival’s music program will feature four active musicians from West Virginia, including Tim Mainland and Maggie Jusiel (board members of the Appalachian South Folklife Center in Pipestem Knob, W.V.), and Lori McKinney and Robert Blankenship, owners of the RiffRaff Arts Collective in Princeton, W.V.
Beginning at 4 p.m., the musical program will continue until 8 p.m. in two sets. The first musical set will take place from 4 to 6 p.m., and will repeat from 6 to 8 p.m.
A delicious dinner buffet featuring Southern style food will also be available at the event. The cost for the dinner buffet will be $12 for adults and $6 for youth under 18 years of age – all you can eat! If you just want dessert and coffee, the charge will be $5. Come sample the great cooking of our First Church chefs and listen to some great music while you enjoy your dinner.
A free will donation will be collected at the door with a suggested minimum of $10 per person or $20 per family. In addition, a dinner buffet, a wide variety of take home food items, arts, crafts and raffles will be available to purchase separately throughout the evening. We will accept cash, personal checks and VISA/Mastercard/Discover for all mission fund donations and other purchases.
